How to Choose a Day Pack

Typical day pack for trekking
On a recent South Col trek in  Ladakh, I noticed one of our trekkers struggling with the straps of his day pack. When I enquired, I learnt that the narrow waist band strap had broken and as a result all the pressure of the load was on his shoulders! The load was slowly pressing on the shoulders and causing this trekker a lot of pain and discomfort. I realised that the day pack  he had chosen was not suitable for trekking - it would have been fine for [...]

Interim Thoughts

Patterns repeat in life - Manmohan Singh

Did Dr. Manmohan Singh preside over the momentous reforms of 1991 in India or not. This is a question of eternal debate in certain circles. The debate rages because they do not want to give credit to someone who they don't like (PV Narasimha Rao).
After Chandra Shekhar had already resigned, MMS asked him to sign in back-date his appointment as UGC boss! http://t.co/z3dfKap3t5 — हम भारत के लोग (@India_Policy) September 26, 2015 But let us look at the evidence. This article written [...]

A Fatwa on AR Rehman

And see how a liberal - Ms. Shabana Azmi reacts:
Majidi & AR cannot make a movie that is inflammatory and would hurt sentiments of the Muslim community @AzmiShabana http://t.co/nlvm6cdqwS — Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) September 17, 2015
In the video linked above, Ms. Shabana Azmi, a self styled liberal - certified and approved by all the other liberals argues (hold your breath), not for the right of Mr. Majidi to make an offensive movie, but she actually says that Mr. Majidi and Mr. AR Rehman [...]

An exploratory trek to NGD waterfalls

September 2015

Prologue

One way to explore Western Ghats is to look at the source of the river!! A year ago I had visited a village at the foothills of Western Ghats. There flowed a stream and for some reason I tried to look at its source (in the map!!). During this journey I found that the stream formed a huge waterfall. The falls was not known much in the internet world.

Superb!! A little bit of more research revealed that my Udupi friends had already explored this waterfall. Knowing them it was [...]

Faces of India - 231

She was selling colorful traditional dresses of Gujarat from a make shift shop put up on footpath. I couldn’t decide her smile was more cheerful or the dresses more colorful. Faces of India, a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. See more here.

Spiti Valley Trekking and Backpacking: My Upcoming Trip

I am headed to the Western Himalayas after a gap of 6 years! The last time I was in this part of the country, I was on my India motorcycle trip and I was traveling solo. This time, the agenda is more #backpacking and #trekking and giving me company is a good friend of mine and a great travel buddy. Today, we are flying to Chandigarh from Bangalore and Hyderabad respectively, where we plan to indulge in a traditional Punjabi lunch, before we make our way to Shimla. The original plan was to take the toy train [...]

Diaries of a Compulsive Traveller

What three years of Himalayan trekking have taught me

Travel, they say, teaches more than you could ever learn in school. I would say trekking — especially of the multi-day Himalayan kind — teaches you more than you could ever learn from ‘ordinary’ travel. This post is an attempt to share what I have learned during my brief career as a Himalayan trekker, though it may not exactly be an exhaustive list.

1.       The value of teamwork

If I learned one thing from my latest trek in Kashmir — Tarsar-Marsar — it’s [...]

Life in Srinagar: Fishing rods, 'murderous' drivers and an old-world charm

Srinagar city from view point on way to Shankaracharya temple

Agar firdaus bar rue zameen ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin ast

(If there is a paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here)

Mughal emperor Jehangir is famously believed to have uttered this Amir Khusroo couplet when he saw Kashmir valley. After crossing over from the barren wildernesses of Afghanistan and especially the Khyber Pass, it’s hardly surprising that the lush meadows of the Valley looked like paradise to [...]

Travel Tales from Mridula

Luxury Travel and Me

Ask me about luxury travel and I will go- nah me and luxury travel? I am not a luxury traveler. Recently I went to Kota Kinabalu with Silk Air and Sabah Tourism Board.

I was showing my daughter some pictures of the beach and she asked, “so mama where is your tent?” And that is my true identity. I am happiest in a tent when all I need is to open the flap and get immersed with nature! But then my kind sponsors put me in business class throughout the trip, both on Singapore Airlines and Silk Air.

When [...]
