A Wandering Mind

Rishikesh with Ravers

Driving through the mountains , I looked out eagerly for my first glimpse of the river. A sharp turn, and the bluish green waters came into sight. I asked the driver to stop, and he did, a little later, at a convenient spot. I just had to get off, and stare at her. Unbidden, tears sprang into my eyes, and I brushed them away hastily. It was an emotional moment, after all, I was setting eyes on the Ganges in Rishikesh, after a gap of over 25 years!

The Urge to Wander

DSCN0164 copy

I do! R and I went to Jordan in 2010 en-route to Egypt. But I was forced to cut out a number of things from our itinerary due to ill health caused by a severe reaction to antibiotics. Being in no shape to walk back through the Siq for the candlelit spectacle of Petra by Night has remained one of my biggest […]

Magdalenen Kirche (Magdalene Church) - A lovely church in Meggen, Switzerland

Magdalenen Kirche or Magdalene Church , located in the town of Meggen in Switzerland, was built in the year 1776/77 and has been an active place of worship since then. However, the church is believed to have existed at the same site from the medieval times, and another building might have been here from as far back as the 12th Century. Very little documentary evidence exists from the era though, and nothing is conclusive on this front.

Europe's migrant crisis- My notes

Sitting in Copenhagen, I am closely watching the unprecedented migrant crisis unfolding in Europe. What began in Southern Europe few weeks ago has now reached northern tip all the way till Denmark, with Denmark-Germany railway and road connections getting suspended earlier this week [Details]. There is an international pressure on European countries to accept large number of refugees on

Merida to Elvas, a Road Trip

The next night halt was planned for Evora in Portugal. The road from Merida in Spain to Evora in Portugal is via Elvas which is at 81kms from Merida. Elvas too is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Such smooth roads all along, it took hardly an hour to reach there. We could hardly see any difference in the scenes around, except that the road had narrowed down considerably. Elvas surprised us. I was

Souvenirs from Poland – amber to rock salt to ginger bread

From fairy tales to world war stories, from knights to astronomers to musicians, from underground salt mines to sea side resorts, from jewellery to breads to rock salt – Poland is an eclectic mix of history, culture and the arts. The towns are steeped in legends and lore, taking you into the world of dragons being defeated by kings and knights from religious order controlling a trade route. And then there are the gruesome concentration camps and stories from the second world war at the Jewish quarter and [...]

Bhutan Diaries : Tiger's Nest Monastery, Paro

That little speck is the Tiger's Nest Monastery

See that little white spot up there? That's Taktsang, or the Tiger's Nest Monastery in Paro , the most sacred site in all of Bhutan. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche, the Indian saint who spread Buddhism across Bhutan, flew to the top of this cliff on the back of his consort, who took the form of a tigress. A monastery was built at the site in the 17th century. It hangs off the rockface dangerously at more than 3100m above sea level, and I demand to know why [...]

Sharing an email.

I wonder at the parents’ lack of interest in finding out who their adult child wants to marry. If the parents claim to be so involved (as most Indians parents do) and are so sure they ‘know better’, then how is it that they don’t want to be sure that he is not abusive and controlling?

What if he is an amazing person and someone just right for their child? How is it that this isn’t their main concern?

Also, with so much focus on seeking their parents’ [...]

Ski lessons in summer? Visit Ski Cloudcroft!

Ever thought of taking a ski lesson in summer? Well, these days, with indoor ski resorts such as Ski Dubai, one can ski pretty much any time of the year. That aside, we never thought the kids could try skiing when we went on a summer road trip to White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. I would have never thought there would be a natural winter ski destination so close to the Chihuahuan desert. Nestled in the little town of Cloudcroft within Lincoln National Forest, Ski Cloudcroft is the southern most ski [...]

Duckbill Spillway at Salaulim Dam & Botanical Gardens

Come monsoons and water bodies of Goa manifest in a different avatar. Beaches become not so inviting rather unlike the rest of the year. Water flowing down from Western Ghats takes the shape of various seasonal waterfalls. Dams overflow and create a mesmerizing scene as they fall from great heights to fill the rivers all ...

Monsoon Motorcycle Ride through Kerala and Karnataka: The Journey through Pictures

One motorcycle, 2 people, 2 states, 3 weeks, 2,300 kms (including 1700km winding Western Ghat roads), lots of rain, sensationally green terrain and an insane number of bridges…that’s how I can summarize this gorgeous motorcycling holiday that I did in August. This ride was special for me as after my 2008-2009 epic motorcycle ride across India, this was the first time that I embarked on a motorcycle journey that was more than a week.
Full time traveling for me began on my motorcycle and hence [...]
