I wake up to the darkness enveloping me in the room. For a moment it is all silent around me. And then I hear the whistle again. A tad familiar and yet, I am unable to place it in this unfamiliar land. I wonder if I am dreaming. My watch gives me a sense of reality. It is 430 in the morning and I am in a wooden lodge by the River Lider in Pahalgam. And then the whistle comes again. It is not that we are united as a nation. Let us be honest. We are divided quite badly. As someone said, the only thing that united us was cricket and perhaps war. Perhaps it is true of all nations, perhaps it is not.
But the least politicians can do is make unity the norm than the other way round. As it is, we are divided. By language, by eating habits, by states, by urban and rural divides, by religion, by caste, by sub caste, by sects...by millions of things.

There are a lot of food delivery start ups that have come up in India. And I suppose more in Bangalore as compared to other cities.
The food delivery idea is good, is smart, works and all of that. But each time food is delivered, it is delivered wrapped in more plastic than the food itself. There is a lot of it. We ordered a couple of times and felt that there is room for some solutions there. There is only so much recycling one can do at a residence. Yes! The bats are in town now. Lots and lots of them! They are in downtown Austin, hanging under the Congress Avenue bridge, waiting for the sun to set. As they set flight from their hideout, they amaze people who gather above the bridge, on the banks of the lake, in boats, or those who are simply walking or driving through downtown. The Rio and Venice carnivals, La Tomatina, Chinese New Year… I see very few Indian names — with the exception of Holi — on the list of the most colourful or amazing festivals across the world. It seems funny now to think that one of the biggest worries I had about moving to the US was whether Puttachi would adjust to school. Would she understand the accents of the teachers and the students? Would she make friends easily, considering that she would be entering at a time when friendships have already been established? Would there be a period of adjustment, would I have to suspend all my work and stand by until she is settled in?
