Dirtcheap fare airline:Ryan Air Europe-Experience & Review

Ryanair is one of the cheapest airlines in the world. You can fly around in Europe for an amount that is cheaper than what it costs to reach airport by taxi. To give an example, you can book Copenhagen-London for INR 1500-3000 round trip, approx. Copenhagen-Kaunas some 2500 round trip. I had an opportunity to experience their flight recently. Below are some of my observations/notes. Like

Woodcutting Windmill- Het Jonge Schaap, Zaanse Schans, NL

Wood cutting powered by wind- Zaanse Schans When at Zaanse Schans, I went inside a windmill campus to take closer look (after paying 4 Euro entry fee). This windmill, called Het Jonge Schaap uses power of wind to cut a log of wood into long slices, which are then used in construction of houses for floor/roof etc. First saw a video that showed construction of the windmill and then we went

Niraamaya Cardamom Club: Slice of Heaven in Thekkady, Kerala

What is your idea of a top class holiday destination? Being one among tropical evergreen forests? Sharing the border with one of the more popular tiger reserves of India? Waking up to the sensationally human whistling call of the Malabar Whistling Thrush? Staying in absolute luxury amidst cardamom plantations? Watching a Malabar giant squirrel jump from tree to tree from the confines of your balcony while drinking your morning coffee? Enjoying lip smacking traditional Kerala cuisine? Treating yourself to some [...]

Indian Backpacker's Travels

Rain and snow at Gulmarg, Kashmir

“ Mumbai ka fashion and Kashmir ka mousam – donon ka koi barosa nahin,” says my driver Basheer, indicating that Kashmir’s weather is as fickle minded as Mumbai’s  fashion statements. Proving him right, the sun strode right on to the horizon with a flourish, pushing away all the damp grey clouds with a single stroke. It was my third day in Kashmir and I was happy to see the sun after two days of incessant rains, power cuts and an after effects of an earthquake that had rocked the Himalayas while [...]

Winning a Stay in Peru with Belmond Hotels of the Orient Express Fame

I went to attend the inaugural Belmond Hotels media event at The Imperial in Delhi. There is an interesting story behind how I went to the event but I will leave it for another day. When I did a search about the company what caught my immediate attention was that they operate the Orient Express! I was smitten and I was looking forward to the event.

I reached at the venue on time. The staff at The Imperial was really courteous as they guided me to the venue Daniell’s Tavern. Belmond representatives from [...]

Ropalidia Social Wasp

I found two foundress Ropalidia species of paper wasps, initiating a new nest on one of the granite pillars of my courtyard. I used my Canon EOS 5DS R fitted with Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro lens, lit by Canon MT-24EX macro twin light flash with a DIY diffuser to capture these wasps and ... Read more

Skywatch Friday - Sunrise in the Forest

Now that I have written about Rishikesh, it is time for me to take a break... and write about random stuff for a while, before getting back to my #summertrip. To begin with, let me share with you, as part of Skywatch Friday, a beautiful sunrise at Tadoba....
We were awaiting our turn to enter the buffer zone of Tadoba, when the sun appeared, over the rim of the trees.

Prom Dresses Online

If you are looking for prom dresses online then you get flooded with options. The search gets even more complicated when you look at the prices. There are sites selling long gowns for as low as $13 to $16. From where I see it I think those sites are waste of money and time. You cannot really get a quality prom dress for that low. Yet another tricky part while shopping for prom dresses online is that you like a particular dress but its not available in that color you want. Thats a Bummer !
As a solution [...]

Is Jordan safe for travel? Here is the answer!

Is Jordan safe for travel?
Located in the Middle East and sharing borders with Israel, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Jordan has been popular with tourists for a long time. But to many, especially in India and the West, safety remains a concern. I was in Jordan for over a week and spent my days travelling across the length and breadth of the country, and never for even one moment felt unsafe. Here is an account of my own personal experiences in Jordan.

It was just my first day in Jordan [...]

Bats in town ???

Yes! The bats are in town now. Lots and lots of them! They are in downtown Austin, hanging under the Congress Avenue bridge, waiting for the sun to set. As they set flight from their hideout, they amaze people who gather above the bridge, on the banks of the lake, in boats, or those who are simply walking or driving through downtown. In addition to being a tourist attraction, these nocturnal flying mammals help the environment by eating insects and pests, and if left alone, are harmless. With this realization, [...]

Life in Srinagar: Fishing rods, 'murderous' drivers and an old-world charm

Srinagar city from view point on way to Shankaracharya temple

Agar firdaus bar rue zameen ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin ast

(If there is a paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here)

Mughal emperor Jehangir is famously believed to have uttered this Amir Khusroo couplet when he saw Kashmir valley. After crossing over from the barren wildernesses of Afghanistan and especially the Khyber Pass, it’s hardly surprising that the lush meadows of the Valley looked like paradise to [...]

Royal Palace of Brussels-grand interiors!

After our free walking tour of Brussels, I went inside the Royal Palace of Brussels. It is located opposite the Brussels park and is locally called "Koninklijk Paleis van Brussel". Entry was free but we had to deposit our bags at the counter. It is open to public only between July 22 and September 6, so I was sort of lucky to be there in right time. This building is the official residence of the

The Appraisal - Story in Reading Hour

My story "The Appraisal" was published in the Jan-Feb issue of Reading Hour . Since the requisite 6 months have passed, I'm reproducing it on my blog for you to read.
The Appraisal

Ningavva walked with unsteady steps down the road, scanning the houses on either side.   Her worn rubber chappals made a clip-clap sound as they slapped the cracked soles of her feet.
It wasn't dark yet, but the streetlights had already been turned on . The distant hum of peak-hour traffic formed a background to [...]

Facebook’s Live Video

Posted in Notes Technology

The only thing that excites me about Mark Zuckerberg’s live video is the anticipation that Facebook’s live video steaming feature would soon be available to all of us (Tech Crunch says that it is available now, but only to celebrities).

And to those who go gaga about the open floor plan that Zuckerberg is boasting about, with his big talk about collaboration and innovation, (apparently Rakuten CEO also boasts the same just about the same day, about his new HQ [...]
